The first ever North by North Park (North Park is a neighborhood in San Diego, CA) took place at the Lafayette Hotel. The conference was followed by music showcases at roughly 20 venues in and around North Park, featuring over 80 bands, djs, emcees, and singer-songwriters.
The Moviegoers played a showcase at the Whistle Stop Bar in South Park. A great time was had by all...on the way back home to NP, we passed by mad numbers of people out and about, a lot of them with NXNP wristbands. Hopefully it was a success for the organizers, and that they get geared up to do it again next year!

Yes, it's time for another "Featured Track." Today we bring you a snippet of time filled with music, by Mangoose's very own Raúl Picaporte. The song is "Pet Rock" the album is Exploring Fantasies. It's killer how short this song is, in a way, but also part of what makes it brilliant. "Pet Rock" is a favorite of mine (sigh, I have many off Exploring Fantasies) and if you catch the Moviegoers playing out some time, chances are you'll get to hear a version of this masterful ditty. Mangoose is currently prepping a re-release of Raúl's Exploring Fantasies, due out in the coming months.

Look to your right. No, not literally...virtually. On this webpage. There is a little sidebar with a few images and letters/words on it. It's a new part of the mangooserecords.com experience. From time to time, we will feature a handful of different tracks from the Mangoose catalog. First up: THE BARBER, a part of On A Wire / ANYTIME, which was recorded in 2001 here, the heart of White County, AK. In some ways THE BARBER is the climax of the record it finds itself on, in other ways it's just another over-the-top, in-too-deep, cliched before it hit the streets, dirty sounding brain drain. The song itself is about a cast of funky characters, all in line at the only hair salon in town. After getting their frightening haircuts, these boys and girls join hands in singing a mantra for the new era: "Baptisms, baptisms, baptisms... straight to your head" as an organ of cathedral like proportions tickles the fancy of millions. It makes no sense. Just listen to it then!

Folks, today is a special day. Mangoose Records has now made the 2003 collaboration between Jay Brockman, Raul Picaporte, and Richard Hunter-Rivera, Songs for a Girl available to listen to: MANGOOSE RECORDS - MEDIA scroll down to find it. Consisting of 16 tracks recorded in and around the years 2002 and 2003, Songs for a Girl is a rather complex and eclectic collection of songs. The themes are dark and moody throughout, lost love, death, getting old, self-destruction through paranoia, living in squalor...yea! Sounds like fun doesn't it! Perhaps the most ambitious tracks on Songs for a Girl is "Empire State", a brooding piano/vocal piece that combines samples of big city life with rather moving melodies...that cuts to an improvised mariachi
performance captured on a subway car, which then fades into a bastardized idea of a Dadaist poem enjoined with a man's take on the apocalypse and 9/11...and ends with a rather hopeful and inspiring musique concrete guitar composition. Dude, it's mad epic. Worth a listen.
Also some really wonderful shorter songs can be found, like "Espada Afilada, a heart-wrenching tale of a downtrodden, stuck-in-a-rut person. Recorded on wax cylinders (ok, not really) Raul's voice and character really ensnare the listener here. Wonderful Spanish guitar playing as well. Also worth a listen.
Finally, a real gem, "Hundred Dollar Bill" is not only almost annoyingly catchy, but also one of the most beautiful one minute and 50 seconds of music I've ever heard. No joke. Jay, you fucking crazy bastard you!

Hello world. From time to time I will try to reminisce and share tales of Mangoose songs past. Let’s start with one of my favorites tracks: Machine, from the album 13 Songs before Breakfast. Machine is not really a song. Instead, it is a sort of sound collage, albeit a very simple one. The track consists entirely of two sampled voice messages left on an answering machine during the 13 Songs recording sessions. The first message was left by a friend of Jay’s, who was in town and wanted to get together. With so much music to make and so little time, Jay didn’t even bother to call back. The next message was left a few days later. In the middle of the night, Jay went outside for some Chicago-in-November fresh air, and somehow managed to get himself locked out of the building. He tried to call the rest of the band for assistance, but with everyone sleeping he got the answering machine instead. The two messages have absolutely nothing to do with each other, but when overlapped, and with a modicum of edits, they become a sort of short story, a wonderful vignette told with only a few, broad strokes of the pen. Enjoy.

In the summer of 2001, Jay Brockman and The Jinich Brothers got together in Mexico, and put together an epic album of children's music for adults, entitled simply Music for Children. Featuring 20 tracks over two discs, the record is a true testament to the power of collaboration. It's difficult to put into words exactly what Music for Children is...but we can try: Music for Children is a musical conjoining of Mexican and American popular and folk styles. Part indie, part acid-ciudad de mexico, part folk, part fusion, the album is probably not well suited for a child's ear, but who are we to judge what you feed your kids? It's probably less harmful to their psyches than most popular television shows. When I was growing up, my dad sang me George Harrison's Piggies all the time. I had no idea the song was in fact socio-political criticism...but those piggies rolling around in the mud, what a riot! Anyway, what better way to find out if Music for Children would help your kids get to sleep, than to join in the madness and listen to it yourself?
